Special Issue on

“Complex Systems and System-of-Systems Engineering for Large-Scale Integrated Infrastructures: Architecture, Coordination, and Resilience”

This Special Issue focuses on systems-level research for large-scale integrated infrastructures, including energy systems, transportation networks, communication systems, industrial platforms, environmental systems, healthcare systems, and emergency response systems. As these infrastructures become increasingly interconnected, interdependent, and dynamically coupled, new systems engineering methods are needed to support architecture design, integration, interoperability, coordination, operation, lifecycle management, and resilience.

Topics of interest include complex systems and system-of-systems engineering, systems architecture, interoperability, modeling and simulation, verification and validation, digital engineering, resilience, robustness, reliability, safety, security, mission assurance, risk-aware design, lifecycle engineering, governance, standards, digital twins, AI-enabled decision support, and case studies in large-scale infrastructure systems. The Special Issue is closely aligned with RASSE 2026 themes including systems science and engineering, system-of-systems, cyber-physical systems, digital twins, distributed systems, and large-scale systems integration.

Special Section on

“Reliability and Resilience of Complex Cyber-Physical Systems: Modeling, Assurance, and System-of-Systems Thinking Perspectives”

This Special Section aims to advance research on the reliability and resilience of complex cyber-physical systems across energy, transportation, industrial automation, communications, autonomous systems, smart infrastructure, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. As CPS become more interconnected, software-intensive, and reliant on sensing, communication, and control, their reliability and resilience are increasingly challenged by faults, uncertainty, cyber-physical threats, degraded conditions, and cross-domain dependencies.

Topics of interest include reliability modeling and analysis, resilience assessment, prognostics and health management, degradation modeling, lifecycle reliability, mission assurance, safety assurance, dependability, operational continuity, model-based reliability engineering, digital engineering, digital twins, fault-tolerant and self-healing CPS architectures, verification and validation, cybersecurity-aware reliability and risk assessment, AI-enabled trustworthy reliability techniques, and multi-domain CPS applications.

The Special Section bridges traditional reliability engineering with modern resilience-oriented CPS design and system-of-systems thinking, and is well aligned with RASSE 2026 topics such as cyber-physical systems, modeling and simulation, autonomous systems, embedded systems, digital twins, and large-scale systems integration.
